I feel very sad. Everything I thought I knew has changed, I am seriously rattled.Pluto has been demoted from the 9th planet in our solar system to a dwarf planet.
For some reason this made me really sad. I remember learning about the planets as a kid and feeling attached to the littlest planet. Awwww. Don't we all like to root for the underdog, the little guy, or as David said "the little guy stuck freezing his butt off."
So poor Pluto. You may just be a ball of ice but we still love you. You will always be my 9th planet.
My favorite quote about poor Pluto is as follows:
"Demoting the icy orb named for the Roman god of the underworld isn't personal - it's just business - said Jack Horkheimer, director of the Miami Space Transit Planetarium and host of the PBS show "Star Gazer."It's like an amicable divorce," he said. "The legal status has changed but the person really hasn't. It's just single again.' "

WHAT! POOR PLUTO...
So when I teach planets do I tell them there are only eight now???
Yes I am afraid now, our children will grow up only knowing the eight "real planets."
Totally strange.
At first when I saw the blurb on tv, "our solar system has shrunk", it sounded as if a plantet had disappeared. After I heard the full report, I thought, " how silly", the solar system is just the same. Only us humans have decided to call Pluto something different. It's still out there. It's like I like to hear my weight in the English measure "stones". Like if I say "OH, I only weigh 3 stones (not the real Number), it sounds so petite. But if I say I weigh 155 pounds (not the real number) it sounds so huge. But actually, my hip size is just the same. It's all in a name.
Except after I read your blog, Analee, I remembered I always liked Pluto to, as a kid, and felt kind of sorry for him, way out there on the edge. So thanks for sharing your perspective. Tell David hi, and he's doing a good job. I'm glad you have him back for a while.
Luv,
Tia Kay
