I used to work with a lady in housekeeping at the hospital. She had a unique way of dealing with this particular meaningless greeting. whenever anyone passed Helen in the hallway, she simply smiled and said " Fine, how are you?" So it negated the need for the for the first greeter to say the obligatory " hi, how you doing?" The first few times she did it, it kind of threw me off balance, but I soon realized she did it to everybody and I got to kind of appreciating the brevity of it!!
And the thing of it was, Helen had this great big smile and dimples and I think it was actually very sincere.
